Mass Shootings Rock the Nation

This past weekend resulted in more mass shooting deaths than during the Memorial Day weekend.

It was the deadliest weekend of mass shooting gun violence this year.

At least 12 people were killed and at least 28 were injured in mass shootings. This does not include victims from shootings that are not classified as mass shootings, which are defined as incidents in which four or more people are shot or killed (not including the shooter).

During Memorial Day weekend, nine people were killed and more than 60 were injured.

At least 245 mass shootings have been recorded so far this year. In 2021, a total of 692 mass shootings were recorded (an average of almost two per day).

This past weekend, an incident occurred in Philadelphia in a street fight in the South Street entertainment district, where three people were killed and 12 were injured.

In Chattanooga, Tennessee, two people were left dead and 12 others were injured at a downtown bar and grill.

Mesa, Arizona had a shooting at a nightclub, where two people were killed and two were injured.

In Summerton, South Carolina, shooting broke out at an outdoor high school graduation party. Eight people were injured. One of the victims died. Police say the incident was gang-related.

At a strip mall party in Phoenix, a 14-year-old girl was killed and eight others were injured after a fight broke out.

A shooting occurred in Macon, Georgia on Saturday night. One person was killed and three others were injured.

“America’s gun violence crisis was on full display this weekend, an emergency crying out for a solution that we know exists,” said Kris Brown, the head of a gun violence prevention group.

Although the statistics are shocking to the public, according to Mark Bryant, Executive Director of the Gun Violence Archive, they are no surprise.  He said that mass shootings typically increase this time of year, starting at Memorial Day.

The weekend’s violence was preceded by shootings in the past few weeks in Buffalo, NY, Uvalde, TX, and Tulsa, OK.
