Mexican Mafia Fugitive Killed in Texas After Murdering Houston Family

A Texas convict associated with the Mexican Mafia, serving a life sentence for murder, managed to cut his restraints, get out of a caged area of a transport bus, stab the driver and get control of the vehicle last month. The two officers on the bus fired shots at the inmate, and deflated the rear tire, causing the escapee to stop the bus and flee into the woods.

Police have been searching for 46-year-old Gonzalo Lopez ever since.

They found the fugitive on Thursday night, 250 miles away from where he escaped the bus, south of San Antonio. Police say he allegedly killed four kids and an adult in their summer home in Leon County, east-central Texas, before they tracked him down and killed him.

Investigators say Lopez stole the family’s truck, which was spotted Thursday night. Police were alerted and a chase ensued. The officers placed spike strips on the road, ripping the truck’s tires, causing Lopez to crash into a telephone pole. Upon exiting the vehicle, he shot at the deputies and they fired back, killing him. No officers were injured.

The convict was armed with an AR-15 and a pistol.

After escaping, it is believed that Lopez had hidden in the woods and rummaged through local houses for supplies.

“We received additional information from the US Marshals Service that he may be in the San Antonio area. So then we heightened our alert and, sure enough, we spotted him,”

Atascosa County Sheriff David Soward said at a press conference Thursday night.

“This dangerous individual is off the street and no officers were injured.”
