Iowa Woman Arrested for the Death of 1,000 Pigs

In Sac City, Iowa, 1,000 pigs were found dead at two sites where they were being confined. An Iowa woman employed by the pig owners is facing criminal charges for the neglect of the pigs that she was responsible for.

Thirty-three-year-old Elana Laber is being charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief and two counts of livestock neglect, according to a press release from the Sac County Sheriff.

The pigs had been dead for at least a week when the sheriff’s department found them. They had no food or water.

When interviewed, Laber told police that someone had shut off the electric breakers the night before the pigs were found dead. However, she had to change her story when it was determined the pigs had been dead much longer.

The company, Corey AGR Inc., owned the pigs and estimate their loss at more than $150,000.
