The LIV Golf International Series is holding their tournament events at the Bedminster Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey this weekend. The golf series is funded by the Saudi government, and Donald Trump is getting a lot of pushback from the families of the victims of 9/11, as well as journalists. They say they are disgusted by Trump’s decision to ignore the Saudi government’s human rights abuses, involvement in 9/11, and responsibility for the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018 at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.
The Bedminster course will host the LIV tournament from July 29-31. Trump’s Miami golf course will host an LIV championship tournament in October.
After the PGA dumped Trump and refused to use his venue for their events in 2016 and 2021, the former president was happy to oblige the LIV this year for a nice paycheck.
Families of 9/11 victims are upset that the event is taking place on US soil and that the tournament is supported by the same government, the Saudis, that funded the 9/11 attack.
The group, 9/11 Justice, plans to protest outside the Bedminster club on Friday.
They sent a statement to the ex-president begging him to reconsider his plans, but Trump refused. The letter expressed “deep pain and anger” over the arrangement.
“It is incomprehensible to us, Mr. Trump, that a former president of the United States would cast our loved ones aside for personal financial gain,” the group wrote.
After unsuccessfully trying to appease the disgruntled protestors, Trump attended an LIV Golf-sponsored welcome party, with his wife Melania in New York City where Rapper Nelly performed and Trump mingled with golf pros and celebrities.
Trump wrote on social media, “All of those golfers that remain ‘loyal’ to the very disloyal PGA, in all of its different forms, will pay a big price when the inevitable MERGER with LIV comes.”
