Chinese Missiles Land in Taiwanese and Japanese Waters

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi left Taiwan yesterday after talks with officials and President Tsai Ing-wen.

China is already showing its indignation over her visit, just as it warned it would.

Chinese missiles landed in Taiwanese and Japanese waters, in military exercises intended to show China’s force. The drills, expected to run 72 hours, will circle and surround the island of Taiwan, and could be a precursor of an attack, or at least a training for an attack.

The exercises are being conducted in an area that could be used to surround and wall off Taiwan from foreign intervention and assistance.

The tensions could dangerously escalate if a wrong move is made. The Japanese government confirmed that several of the missiles had fallen into Japanese exclusive territory waters.

“This is a grave issue that concerns our national security and the safety of the people,” said Japan’s Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi.

China’s leader, Xi Jinping, insists he wants to unify Taiwan and China peacefully, but he has not ruled out the use of force. Some analysts say that China is preparing for an attack, and the Pelosi trip may be a catalyst. Others point out that this is not the first time China has threatened military force in response to US support of Taiwan.

On an interview on Chinese television, Major General Meng Xiangqing, a professor of strategy at the National Defense University in Beijing, said, “You all can wait and see. This is the first time that the military will hold a joint military operation around all of Taiwan island. It should be said that although this is an exercise resembling actual combat, it can at any time turn into real combat.”
