He was greeted by cheering crowds assembled at Buckingham Palace in London. The crowd, in an emotional showing, sang “God Save the King.”
Many people had gathered at the palace to leave flowers, and many were seen crying, as thousands came and went to pay their respects to the royal family.
Charles and his wife Camilla, now the Queen Consort, was at the side of the Queen when she died at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she had been resting and receiving medical care.
Charles, though occupied with the death of his mother, had to return to London to meet with the new prime minister, Liz Truss, and address the nation.
Charles will officially be proclaimed king on Saturday by the Accession Council at St James’s Palace.
The King said that the Queen’s death was sad not only for him but for the world. “I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world,” the 73-year-old former prince said in a statement.
