Rosa Isela Castro Vazquez, 20 years old and eight months pregnant, had no idea what she was getting into when she went to meet a woman she contacted through Facebook, who agreed to give her secondhand baby clothes.
Vazquez was reported missing on Wednesday, November 30. She had gone to a pharmacy in her state of Veracruz, Mexico to meet a woman she arranged with on Facebook. When she did not return, her husband got worried and called the police.
Security footage at the pharmacy showed Vazquez being led inside a vehicle by a woman who appeared to be nervous and looking around.
Vazquez was later found dead on the Los Arrieros ranch. Like a scene out of a horror movie, her newborn was found, having been cut out of her.
The couple that killed her, Gonzalo “N” and Veronica “N,” were detained and arrested after they took the baby to the Veracruz Regional Hospital to register it. Since they were not able to provide proof that the child was theirs, hospital staff called the police.
According to the police records, Veronica “N” was incapable of conceiving, and was faking a pregnancy for months before the incident.
The couple was charged with kidnapping and femicide. The infant was moved to a safe location.
Femicide has become an increasing problem in Mexico. Reports show that in 2021, approximately 1,000 out of 3,700 female murders were classified as femicide. These incidents have caused people to protest about the femicide crisis in Mexico.
