A California man has been arrested for killing his pregnant sister. He was accused of murdering her and setting her body on fire in a trash can on December 13, 2022.
Fresno police say that Aaron Jamal Dudley, 41, is charged with a double murder, because his sister was eight months pregnant. The unborn baby boy did not die due to the fire. He was killed because his mother, N-Kya Rebecca Logan, 26, was stabbed in the uterus.
The mom-to-be’s friends had just thrown a baby shower for her two days before the stabbing.
The body was found by a maintenance crew near an apartment complex on North Cornelia Street in Fresno and police were called.
Officers responding to the scene discovered Logan’s body in a trash can in an alley. The fire department and police discovered a melted gas canister a few feet from the body. The killer had poured gas all over her presumably dead body before setting it on fire.
A witness said they had seen someone on the access road bring a city garbage can to the area and start a fire. They thought the person was burning garbage so they didn’t make anything of it.
Security footage from surrounding houses shows the accused, Dudley, pushing a garbage can out to the road from the house he shared with his sister. He then lit her body on fire.
Paco Balderrama, the Fresno Police Chief, said during a press conference that they had several witnesses who saw the fire. One of them took a picture of a man the police believe is the suspect, standing over Logan’s body. He also said that police had the surveillance footage of the man pushing a garbage can, which they believe Logan’s dead body was in before her brother set it on fire.
Police officers executed a search warrant on Dudley’s home and arrested him as he was trying to escape.
Lisa A. Smittcamp, Fresno County District Attorney, said during the press conference on Wednesday that killing a fetus is murder and that the prosecution would seek the death penalty.
Although the police have not released a motive for the gruesome murder, the Police Chief said the relationship between Dudley and his sister was not good, and that Dudley was previously ruled a danger to his family. Officers responded to his sister’s home on July 28, 2021, and Dudley was placed in detention for 72 hours. Logan said she feared for her life when she called the police that day.
Chief Balderrama said that it takes a lot of evil, hate, and planning to stab your pregnant sister and her unborn child to death.
