A street fight turned deadly in San Antonio, Texas.
A group of about 30 people were arguing about alleged bullying incidents in school. The fight broke out on the residential street when the family of a bully showed up at the home of the bully’s victim, ready to fight. The victim’s mother, Ashley Lopez, was defending her daughter, and she ended up dead.
Ana Blanco, the mother of Lopez, said that her 11-year-old granddaughter was being bullied by some kids in school, and that the mom, Lopez, 28, defended her daughter when the bully’s family started the fight on her street.
Lopez, a mother of five, was at one point arguing with a woman in the crowd.
Another woman, later identified as 36-year-old Penny Gomez, left in the middle of the chaos and got behind the wheel of a silver Hyundai Sonata. She allegedly intentionally drove toward Lopez and the woman Lopez was arguing with.
Gomez was then seen driving her car directly into the two women, killing Lopez, and injuring the other.
According to the arrest affidavit, at least five witnesses told police they saw Gomez plunge her car straight at the victims.
Lopez’s mother said that witnesses were pounding on the car, trying to stop the driver, and yelling that Lopez was under the car, but Gomez wouldn’t stop.
The two women were dragged about 20 to 30 feet, and then Lopez drove away from the scene.
Witnesses gave police their cell phone footage which confirmed their observations. Two passengers in Gomez’s car got out and returned to the scene where the women were bleeding on the ground. Their statements corroborated those of the other witnesses.
Police arrested Gomez and charged her with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
According to the police, Gomez was already wanted for unrelated drug possession charges.
In addition to the murder and assault charges, Gomez faces drug possession charges.
