Prince Harry just released his startling memoir, “Spare,” which hit bookstores and media outlets on January 10. In the book, he tackles the so-called conspiracy theories related to his mother’s death.
Harry was only 12 years old when his mother Princess Diana died in 1997 in the famous car crash that shocked the world. In his book, Harry talks about the mystery around her death in the Paris Alma tunnel while she was being chased and hounded by paparazzi.
Even now, 26 years later, Harry says there are details about his mother’s death that could not be explained. He says that he is still unsure why his mother’s driver, Henri Paul, lost control of the Mercedes during the accident.
The official conclusion after an investigation into the incident was that Henri Paul was intoxicated and was driving at a high speed. Prescription drugs were found in his body.
In his memoir “Spare,” Harry says that several years ago, he drove through the famous tunnel to try to make sense of the event, and decided that it is almost “impossible” to lose control of a vehicle there unless you are entirely blinded at the wheel. He writes that he asked to view images from the police report, but he did not go so far as to ask for a new investigation.
He continues to wonder what really happened that tragic day.
There are several popular conspiracy theories surrounding the accident in the Paris Alma tunnel. The most shocking one was started by a statement by Dodi Fayed’s father. Dodi Fayed was Princess Diana’s boyfriend who was traveling with her in the doomed car and was also killed in the crash. Mohamed Fayed accused the Queen’s husband and Harry’s grandfather, Prince Philip, of ordering the security services to kill the couple. A coroner rejected the theory.
Prince Harry recalled the moment his father walked into his room and sat on the edge of his bed at Balmoral Castle and told him that his mother had died. He described how his father did not embrace him but put his hand on his knee and tried to console him.
He writes that he only cried once for his mother. He remembered shaking the damp hands of mourners who were sharing their sorrow, distraught at the tragic news of his mother’s death.
Prince Harry said that he doesn’t have many childhood memories from before his mother’s death, and like other individuals who have suffered loss, he finds it hard to bring the memories back.
The death of his mother was the most traumatic incident in his life, according to the prince.
In an interview last week, Harry told “Good Morning America” co-anchor Michael Strahan that for a long time, due to the conspiracy theories, he refused to believe that his mother was really dead.
One of the main reasons Prince Harry moved his family to California was because he never wants what happened to his mother to happen to his family. His worst fear is that his children will grow up without a mother or a father, and felt his family was in danger in the UK.
