A 17-year-old teenager is facing several charges, including a murder charge, and police are searching for his accomplice.
The teen, Rafael Harvey, and another unidentified man shot two men at a Citgo gas station, during what police are calling an attempted carjacking, in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago on Tuesday, January 3.
Harvey was charged with several felony crimes, including first-degree murder, attempted carjacking, and attempted first-degree murder, after he and his companion allegedly shot two passengers in their car outside the gas station at around 2:30 am.
One of the men was killed and the other was seriously injured.
At the time of his court hearing, Harvey was in the hospital being treated for a gunshot wound in his shoulder, and was not able to attend. The judge set his bond at $1 million.
Authorities have not identified or arrested the accomplice they believe accompanied Harvey.
According to Anne McCord Rodgers, the Assistant State Attorney, the two passengers who were attacked were a 45-year-old man and a 36-year-old man.
Harvey and the other gunman pulled up to the Citgo gas station in a stolen Hyundai as the 36-year-old was entering the convenience store.
Harvey and his accomplice waited until the man returned to his car, and then ambushed the two.
During an attempt by Harvey to open the victim’s car door, one of the passengers pulled out a gun and shot Harvey in his right shoulder. A gun battle took place between the four men, as Harvey and the other suspect fired several rounds at both victims.
The 36-year-old man exited the vehicle with a .357 gun. The two assailants continued firing their guns, but then fled the scene in the stolen car.
The 45-year-old man suffered several gunshot wounds and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The 36-year-old man received gunshots to his legs. He survived the shooting and was in fair condition, according to the police report after the incident.
Surveillance cameras in the vicinity of the gas station recorded the incident. Police were able to track the stolen Hyundai from the gas station using surveillance cameras and plate readers. They detected that the vehicle had stopped at St. Bernard Hospital, where the unidentified accomplice brought Harvey.
According to Rodgers, Harvey’s girlfriend had alerted police earlier in the day that he had threatened her with a gun.
Police found the stolen Hyundai a few houses down from Harvey’s home.
A follow-up hearing was scheduled for January 12.
