8-Year-Old Dead at Popular Luxury Fiji Resort

An Australian boy aged eight, from Sydney, was on vacation with his family at the Club Wyndham Resort on Denarau Island in Fiji when he was found dead in a flower garden on February 9.

The child had been playing in the garden, according to witnesses, “chasing frogs,” when he was electrocuted by a live wire from a lamp post.

The child was identified as Cairo Winitana. He was found by another guest at the resort and rushed to a nearby hospital in Nadi, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy done on the boy confirmed that he died by electrocution.

Some have spoken out that it was not the first time someone experienced an electric shock at the Club Wyndham resort.

In June last year, a complaint came from an Australian man staying at the resort. He took pictures showing evidence of light fixtures on a garden path that was wet after a rain. The man said he got a powerful electric shock when he touched one of the light fixtures.

He said he told the hotel staff about it but doesn’t know if they took care of the dangerous issue.

In a statement, the resort said it had located and roped off the area where the incident occurred and assured guests that there were no additional risks.

The resort declined to comment on the allegations made by the Australian guest last year.
