An Australian teenager was jet skiing in Swan River in Perth. The 16-year-old jumped into the water and was mauled and killed by a shark.
Acting Police Inspector Paul Robinson spoke to news media and said that the girl probably spotted a pod of dolphins near where she and her friends were jet skiing. Her companions stayed on their jet skis.
Shark sightings and killings in Swan River, which connects to the Indian Ocean, happen but are rare.
Local media speculated that the attack could have been from a bull shark.
The river is a popular habitat for bull sharks, and people were warned to be cautious when sporting or swimming at the river.
The last fatal shark attack in Perth’s Swan River was in November 2021, when a bull shark attacked a 50-year-old local man who died from injuries to his leg.
Experts continue to emphasize that shark attacks are rare events in the Swan River area, and people should be cautious but shouldn’t panic.
