A 59-year-old Australian man was killed in a shark attack off a beach in Australia’s New Caledonia.
The incident was captured on video by startled witnesses, but the footage was considered too disturbing to be shared.
The brave efforts of a jet-skier and two lifeguards’ attempts to save the injured man were also captured on video.
After the attack, the lifeguards were observed desperately attempting to rescue the victim from the water and return him to the beach.
The man was swimming a short distance from the shore when he was repeatedly bitten on the legs and arms by a shark, most likely a tiger shark over 13 feet long.
A man on a jet ski helped retrieve him from the water, but he was unresponsive.
The two lifeguards attempted to administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation to the injured man but were unsuccessful. A blanket was placed over him before he was placed on a stretcher and removed from the beach.
Authorities have not disclosed the victim’s identity, although it appears he was on vacation alone when he was attacked.
A nearby restaurant’s deck may have been the source of the food that lured the shark to the beach.
After a 49-year-old woman was attacked by a shark on January 29, the beach was closed for three days prior to the fatal incident that occurred on Sunday. A woman named Bridgette Do lost a limb to a shark bite just a few feet away from the beach.
A man was attacked in the same spot a few days after Do’s attack, but he managed to escape.
