Prince Harry truly gave an insight into his life before marriage as he shared numerous personal stories in his memoir “Spare,” including one incident where he ingested magic mushrooms at Courteney Cox’s (known for her role in “Friends”) home in Los Angeles.
The 38-year-old prince revealed in his book that he was a fanatic of the 90s comedy series “Friends.” He said that the NBC sitcom was one of the few things that calmed him down while he was dealing with panic attacks after his second Afghan tour over a decade ago.
Harry said that huge crowds and cameras made him anxious after the tour, so he stayed home most of the time. He would sit around the house eating “takeaway” and watching the TV shows “24” or “Friends,” and according to the book, he watched every episode in 2013. He noticed a lot of similarities between himself and the character Chandler.
In the book, he said that even though people speculated that he clung to his bachelor life because it was glamorous, many evenings would end with him folding his underwear and watching the episode of “Friends” where Monica and Chandler get married.
Prince Harry said he stopped going out completely in 2014 due to anxiety.
In 2016, the Duke of Sussex visited Los Angeles with a friend and spent a few days attending parties. On one of those days, his friend’s girlfriend, who was friends with the superstar from “Friends,” took them to Courteney Cox’s house.
At the time, Cox was traveling and did not mind if they spent the night in her house. Harry wrote that he was excited about staying at the star’s house, as he was a huge fan. Later that day, Cox showed up at the house.
Cox called a few friends over, and there was a party. Will Arnett, an actor from the “Batman Lego Movie,” led Harry and his friend to a fridge to get drinks. They spotted a box full of chocolate mushrooms, and someone told him they were for everyone and to help himself, which he did.
Harry and his friend went outside, and the psychedelic mushrooms started to kick in. Harry went into the house to use the bathroom a short while later, and that’s when he started to see monsters. He said he stared at a silver trash can in the bathroom, and it stared back at him, and when he stepped on the foot pedal, a huge mouth opened, and the toilet, or loo as Harry would call it, looked like a huge head.
Prince Harry described his mushroom experience as “delightful” in the book.
Cox, who was supposed to be away, showed up and said it was okay for everyone to stay. She had plenty of room.
In reference to Cox, Harry writes, “I was still confused because she was Monica, and I was a Chandler. I wondered if I’d ever work up the courage to tell her. Was there enough tequila in California to get me that brave?”
