Spanish police said that a young Californian man who was on vacation with his girlfriend in Majorca died after jumping off a cliff and hitting the rocks.
A local media source claims that the 26-year-old man passed away. The tragedy took place at around 1:50 pm on Saturday, March 25, in Cala Varques Bay, which is east of Majorca.
Although the incident is still under investigation by local police, it is thought that the man misjudged his jump from a 40-foot cliff and landed on the rocks instead of the water.
People on a nearby sailboat saw the incident and quickly sped over to help the victim. When help finally arrived, they called for assistance, but the man had stopped breathing. He was taken to the shore, where medical professionals attempted to revive him.
Police, maritime rescue teams, and a helicopter were called to the scene, according to local news reports, but they were unable to save the man.
At Cala Varques Bay, serious accidents happen far too frequently as a result of the precarious cliff jumps.
Without a safety line, climbing near the bay is very common and dangerous.
According to locals, the jump can be calculated incorrectly because the water obscures the rocks from view.
Additionally, it may take up to 50 minutes for rescue teams to arrive when something goes wrong near the bay. Chances of surviving serious accidents there are often slim.
People have received repeated warnings from officials not to jump off the cliffs.
About 2.5 miles separate Cales de Majorca from Cala Varques Bay. The bay is remote and challenging for rescue personnel to reach because it is situated on a nature reserve.
A 17-year-old boy jumped off a steep cliff there and suffered Injuries in June of last year.
