An employee of a Dunkin’ Donuts in Clearwater, Florida is charged with shooting and critically wounding a father of two on Monday, March 6.
After allegedly shooting a customer outside the shop, Khalil Abdul Shakur Shaheed, a 22-year-old Dunkin’ Donuts employee from St. Petersburg, was detained by the Clearwater Police Department.
After purchasing ice cream for his two young children and his girlfriend, Jewitt Steele, 38, reportedly got into an argument with the employee outside the store.
The victim’s girlfriend called the police on Monday evening shortly after 6 pm to tell them that Steele had been shot at the Dunkin’ Donuts. She can be heard reassuring his two children that their father was fine and wouldn’t pass away.
According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect exited through the back door while Steele and his family left through the front door. He cornered Steele in the parking lot and started talking to him and they got into a fight.
Chief Daniel Slaughter spoke to the media and said that the two men were strangers and that the investigation was still ongoing.
The employee, Shaheed, according to Chief Slaughter, pulled a gun and started shooting. Three shots were fired, two of which struck Steele in the right upper thigh and the left knee. The victim was taken to the Bayfront Health Center for treatment.
Shaheed was apprehended by police in a nearby parking lot while still carrying the weapon. Chief Slaughter believes that the suspect most likely acquired the gun legally.
Shaheed was taken into custody and accused of carrying a gun in a concealed manner as well as aggravated battery.
