The death of a former American athlete has sparked an investigation in the Virgin Islands.

According to a news statement from the US Virgin Islands Police Department, Jamie Cail, 42, was discovered unresponsive at her house earlier this year, and was confirmed dead at a local hospital.

According to her relatives, Cail, a former swimming champion who won many titles in major tournaments in the 1990s and 2000s, relocated to the Virgin Islands and worked at a coffee shop in St. John.

The swimmer was raised in Claremont, New Hampshire.

Law enforcement authorities reported that Cail’s boyfriend, identified by sources as Kamal Thomas, came to their home around midnight and discovered her lifeless on the floor. According to the press release, he had returned home from a neighboring tavern to check on his girlfriend.

Thomas said that he and a buddy carried the 42-year-old woman to a nearby car and rushed her to the hospital.

Cail was given CPR by staff at the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic right away, but she was unable to be revived. Upon arrival, medics declared her dead.

The police department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau is now investigating her death.

Cail’s fascination with swimming began as a child. She competed in freestyle and butterfly competitions in 1998 and 1999. She went on to represent the US in the FINA Swimming World Cup and the Pan Pacific Championships.

According to FINA, now known as World Aquatics, she earned a gold medal in the Pan Pacific Championships and a silver medal at the FINA Swimming World Cup.

Cail was a part of the women’s swim team at the University of Maine from 2000 to 2001 before graduating in 2003.
