14 Dead in Potato Warehouse Collapse

When the roof of a cold storage warehouse collapsed on March 16, 14 workers in India were crushed to death by sacks of potatoes and other debris.

According to police officials, 24 people were extricated from the wreckage of the collapsed warehouse in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, and 14 of them died as a result of their injuries.

Social media videos of the aftermath show search and rescue workers sorting through the wreckage and moving bricks, huge potato sacks, and other debris to help clear the area and look for people who might be buried beneath it.

According to a news report, the death toll initially stood at eight but eventually rose to 14.

Shalabh Mathur, Deputy Inspector General of Police, told reporters on the scene that nearly all of the missing employees had been located.

More video from the scene showed dozens moving massive potato sacks and dumping heaps of concrete and debris into nearby dumpsters.

By the weekend, about six of the injured had already been released from the hospital, while four others were still receiving care.

In the wake of the tragedy, Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister, established a committee to look into the tragic collapse and asked them to submit a report of their findings as soon as possible.

The Chief Minister has also stated that the wounded will receive about $600 and free medical care, while the relatives of the deceased will receive about $2,400.

Authorities have filed a police complaint against the building’s owner and two other people as a result of the collapse. It is believed that the roof was recently rebuilt, but not in accordance with the necessary standards and safety procedures.

While the primary suspects were missing, police superintendent Chakresh Mishra announced that they had four people in custody for questioning.

The families of the victims received condolence messages from India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who also wished all injured workers a speedy recovery.
