Fox News announced its decision to sever ties with Tucker Carlson, the right-wing extremist who had been a prime-time host and significantly influenced the Republican Party.
The media and political spheres were caught off guard by the news.
While Fox thanked Carlson for his years of service as a popular anchor and contributor, the statement did not offer an explanation for his dismissal. It merely mentioned that he hosted his final show on Friday, April 21.
According to an insider, Fox Corporation CEO Lachlan Murdoch and Fox News CEO Suzanne Scott made the decision to fire Carlson on Friday evening. Carlson, who did not respond to requests for comment, was informed of the decision on Monday morning.
The announcement came a week after Fox News settled Dominion Voting Systems’ $787.5 million defamation lawsuit, which exposed Carlson insulting colleagues. Furthermore, Abby Grossberg, the former top booker for Carlson’s show, filed a lawsuit in March that included allegations of sexism on the show.
Some of Carlson’s private messages were revealed during the Dominion lawsuit, including one where he declared his hate for former President Donald Trump.
Carlson had a significant influence within the GOP during his tenure as a prime-time Fox News host. He consistently promoted conspiracy theories, cast doubt on the 2020 election’s legitimacy, spread misinformation about Covid-19 vaccines, and echoed white nationalist talking points.
The Anti-Defamation League’s Jonathan Greenblatt applauded Fox News’ decision, stating that Carlson had used his prime-time show to spread hate to millions.
Shares of Fox Corporation dropped about 5% following the announcement of Carlson’s termination.
