A gripping rescue unfolded in Lake Thonotosassa, Florida, as a group of boaters and a deputy sheriff raced against time to save a father and his daughter who found themselves treading water in alligator-infested waters after their jet ski sank.

Christopher Snow, 31, and his 13-year-old daughter, Alexis, decided to enjoy a day out on the lake riding their jet ski on April 15. However, when they failed to return by nightfall, Snow’s worried girlfriend, Carolyn Joyce, sought help from Deputy Kevin Reich of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, who happened to be nearby conducting a routine patrol.

By chance, SamanthaJo Conover and her husband, Jason Font, overheard the exchange between Joyce and Deputy Reich. The couple, who were themselves boating enthusiasts, had spotted the father-daughter pair earlier in the day and felt compelled to join the search and rescue efforts.

Together with Joyce and Deputy Reich, the Conovers embarked on a frantic search to find the missing dad and daughter. After 40 minutes of scouring the lake, they finally located Christopher and Alexis, who had been treading water for over an hour after their jet ski unexpectedly sank.

Captured on Deputy Reich’s body camera, the tense moment showed the father and daughter desperately crying out for help as they struggled to stay afloat in the dangerous waters. Fortunately, both were pulled to safety onto the Conovers’ boat and, despite the ordeal, did not require medical attention.

Following the rescue, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office issued a press release in which Christopher Snow urged fellow water sports enthusiasts to always wear properly fitted life jackets. He acknowledged that his own life jacket had not been secured correctly, which could have resulted in further danger for him and his daughter during their time in the treacherous waters.

Lake Thonotosassa, the largest natural lake in Hillsborough County, is home to a substantial population of American alligators, a top predator and symbol of Florida’s ecosystem. The lake provides opportunities for various water sports, such as jet skiing, boating, fishing, and kayaking.
