Reporters got to view some of the injuries Dick Van Dyke received in his recent car crash in Malibu, and he told them the accident left him sore all over.
The 97-year-old Mary Poppins star was spotted with his 51-year-old wife Arlene Silver and a friend. Van Dyke pointed out two stitches on his chin from the accident last week.
The celebrity assured fans in a video posted on Friday, March 24, that he was doing fine despite being bruised.
Van Dyke joked about how he sustained the injuries on his chin, telling the reporters that the airbags in his Lexus did not deploy when he smashed into the gate, so he had his face planted right on the steering wheel, which made him a little dumber.
Van Dyke, flashing his trademark grin, laughed off the reporters’ concerns and assured them he was fine. He explained that he was 97 years old and had no living friends left.
The celebrity restated previous statements in which he expressed gratitude for being alive and joy over the fact that he is still able to enjoy himself.
Van Dyke crashed his silver Lexus into a gate in Malibu on March 15. He may have lost control of the vehicle because the road was wet and slick due to the recent rains in California.
The famous actor’s mouth and nose are bloodied in photos taken at the scene of the accident. After paramedics checked him out, he declined to go to the hospital, so a friend drove him home. Despite the accident, the actor seemed in good spirits.
The police concluded that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash but required that Van Dyke retake his driving test anyway.
Van Dyke was in another accident about ten years ago, in which his car caught fire and was completely destroyed.
While driving in 2013, Van Dyke saw smoke coming from his car’s hood. Just as his car was engulfed in flames, he pulled over and was rescued by a passerby.
