On April 11, a tragic incident unfolded at the Stewart Funeral Home located in the Northeast section of Washington, DC. The shooting happened just after a funeral service for Stephon Lamont Carroll, 24, who was murdered on March 24 in Southeast DC. The incident led to one fatality and three people sustaining serious injuries.
When the police received reports of a shooting around 12:15 p.m., they quickly arrived at the funeral home. Upon arrival, officers found two men and two women who had been shot as attendees were leaving the building. Sadly, 29-year-old Terrell Coghill was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three victims were taken to local hospitals, where they received medical treatment.
The Metropolitan Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident and a search for a white Lexus IS350, which was captured on surveillance footage at the scene of the crime. The police are asking anyone with information about the vehicle to come forward. They have said that the car may be damaged at the bottom of the front passenger door.
Police Chief Robert J. Contee III expressed uncertainty about why the shooting occurred and who specifically could have been targeted. The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made.
Carroll’s murder and the shooting at the funeral home have further raised concerns about the increasing violence in the city, which has seen a significant rise in homicide rates in recent years.
A reward of $25,000 has been offered to anyone with information leading to an arrest and conviction related to Carroll’s murder. The police are urging anyone with information to contact them and help bring the perpetrators to justice.
