In October of last year, a woman in the small Illinois village of Maquon hid a man’s body in a storage unit.
Police arrested Marcy Oglesby, 50, of Maquon shortly after discovering a body hidden in her storage space and charged her with hiding a death. She was not initially charged with the man’s murder.
The Knox County district attorney’s office added new charges in February. Oglesby was accused of killing Richard Young, the former Maquon police chief, and storing his body in the storage facility.
However, on March 16, Judge Andrew Doyle dismissed the majority of the additional charges during a motion hearing.
Charges for attempted murder, hiding a homicidal death, aggravated battery by ingesting a toxic substance, murder, or a strong likelihood to injure or kill were dropped in February.
Forgery charges and hiding a death are still active.
The woman’s attorney had argued that the murder charges against his client would prevent his client from receiving a fair trial. The State’s attorney for Knox County, Jeremy Karlin, announced that they would appeal Judge Doyle’s decision.
After calls about a foul smell coming from one of the units, Knox County deputies went to the Maquon storage facility on October 7, 2022.
Oglesby initially told the police a possum had passed away inside the unit when questioned, which was false. Police searched the storage unit and found a sizable storage box, which Oglesby refused to open.
After some time had passed, Oglesby informed the authorities that the box contained a body. Police detained her and accused her of hiding a corpse.
Richard R. Young, 71, a former Maquon police chief, was identified as the man in the box in March.
Young’s demise is still being investigated, but a toxicology report found that he had high concentrations of a poisonous substance that is typically found in eye drops.
A detective from the Knox County Sheriff’s Department testified last month that the victim and the suspect were romantically involved.
On April 3, the Oglesby pre-trial hearing took place.
