At least ten people were killed, and nine others were injured when a gunfight broke out during a car show on Saturday.
The tranquil afternoon of San Vicente, a coastal town on the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico, was shattered when gunfire erupted during the closing day of a two-day off-road car rally. The event swiftly turned into a scene of terror and pandemonium.
Shocking footage began to surface on social media platforms, captured by spectators who witnessed the terrifying events unfold. The recorded videos showed off-road vehicles stationed alongside a road, along with the eerie sound of gunshots and horrified screams echoing in the background. Based on local officials’ reports, several individuals armed with rifles got out of two gray vans situated at a nearby service station and began shooting at the gathered car rally enthusiasts.
Emergency response was quick, with municipal and state police, the Marines, the Fire Department, and the Mexican Red Cross converging on the scene. Chilling videos displayed the panic-stricken crowd fleeing the eruption of gunfire, with several people evidently fallen to the ground.
The burst of gunfire stopped almost as abruptly as it started, with the armed individuals quickly retreating, boarding their vans, and fleeing from the scene.
The wounded were immediately taken to hospitals located in northern Baja California, with Mexico’s Red Cross overseeing their care. While the identities and nationalities of those injured remain undisclosed, the director of Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias has linked the mass shooting to a long-standing feud between the CJNG and Sinaloa cartels, according to the Times of San Diego.
In the wake of the horrific event, Attorney General Ricardo Ivan Carpio Sanchez has launched a specialized investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the deadly shooting.
