A two-year-old girl, who had gone missing, was found deceased in an open well next to her daycare center.
The distressing discovery was made when Claire, the girl’s mother, arrived at Watch Me Grow Day Care in Cobourg, Ontario on Thursday afternoon, May 25. The staff at the daycare realized that the girl was missing only when Claire came to pick up her daughter.
Following an exhaustive search, the young girl, Vienna Rose Irwin, was discovered in the well about an hour later.
Local residents described the scene of daycare staff frantically seeking help to locate the missing toddler, while law enforcement also arrived at the scene. Greg Gotthelf, a neighbor across the street from the daycare, tearfully recounted witnessing Vienna’s mother during the search. Overwhelmed with emotion, he empathized with the anguish she must have been experiencing.
The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed that a child had been reported missing from an address in Hamilton Township and was later found deceased. The investigation into the tragic incident is ongoing, with law enforcement authorities and Ontario’s chief coroner examining the circumstances of Vienna’s death. Staff members at the daycare are cooperating with the authorities during this process.
Watch Me Grow Day Care, where the incident occurred, is a fully licensed establishment with no prior history of significant incidents, as confirmed by the Ministry of Education. The ministry expressed its profound sorrow upon learning of the child’s death and extended its deepest condolences to Vienna’s grieving family and loved ones.
