On Thursday, May 18, Congressional Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene caused a stir when she introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden.
She pointed to his handling of migrant crossings at the Mexico border as the primary cause for her actions.
Greene accused President Biden of abusing his power and jeopardizing national security, alleging that he deliberately compromised the United States’ safety by neglecting immigration laws and failing to secure the border. She claimed his administration’s actions had allowed millions of undocumented individuals from more than 160 countries to enter the US illegally while depriving border patrol of essential resources and policies to protect the nation. In her statement, Greene further charged that the Biden administration willfully violated the law by permitting undocumented immigrants to enter and reside within the US borders.
One of the articles of impeachment Greene introduced says that Biden’s actions increased illegal border crossings, including smuggling dangerous narcotics such as fentanyl. It also alleges his administration knowingly violated the law by releasing illegal immigrants into the country’s interior. The Trump-era border policy known as Title 42, implemented in 2020 to expedite the expulsion of migrants without asylum hearings due to the pandemic, continued under the Biden administration until its recent termination.
Despite Greene’s impeachment efforts, House Republicans lack the necessary majority to impeach President Biden. Similar efforts against Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, have also faltered, suggesting a recurring pattern of unsuccessful impeachment attempts by Republicans.
Greene’s second impeachment article accuses Biden of endangering Americans by admitting COVID-19-positive undocumented immigrants without proper screening. It further alleges that the Department of Homeland Security released and transported numerous migrants into the US without adequate COVID-19 checks. The third article contends that Biden’s border policies have resulted in a national security crisis and have put ordinary Americans in danger.
President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas have consistently stressed that the border is closed and have discouraged migrant crossings.
The White House quickly denounced Greene’s actions. A spokesperson underscored the political nature of her impeachment attempt and brought attention to her controversial statements, which include her support for defunding the FBI and her involvement in the January 6 insurrection.
