A Texas man has been charged with murder for allegedly shooting his girlfriend after she underwent an abortion without his consent.

Harold Thompson, 22, faces charges of murder, assault against a family or household member, and obstructing their breath or circulation following the fatal shooting of his girlfriend, Gabriella Gonzalez, 26, in a Dallas parking lot. Police report that Thompson tried to put Gonzalez in a chokehold and then shot her after she returned from Colorado, where she had the abortion the previous night.

The Associated Press reported on May 15 that Thompson is believed to be the child’s father and opposed Gonzalez’s decision to have an abortion. Officers arrived at the scene around 7:40 am on Wednesday, and Dallas Fire and Rescue pronounced Gonzalez dead. Surveillance footage reveals Gonzalez resisting Thompson’s attempted chokehold before he shot her in the head and multiple other times, then fled the scene. Thompson is currently being held without bond in the Dallas County Jail.

According to the police, the victim’s sister heard the shooting and a witness saw Thompson trying to choke Gonzalez. However, she was unable to call the police as she did not have her phone.

Authorities arrested Thompson on Friday, May 12, and charged him with murder. The investigation into Gonzalez’s death is ongoing.

In September 2021, Texas enacted a law banning abortions after six weeks of pregnancy. However, since the overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision last summer, nearly all abortions in Texas have ceased, with exceptions made for medical emergencies.
