Police found 45 trash bags containing human remains in a ravine while searching for several missing call center workers.
Confirmation of the grim discovery came on Wednesday from the Jalisco state prosecutor’s office. They stated that the bags were found in a forested area below an overlook near Guadalajara, Mexico. Firefighters and civil defense units, with the aid of a helicopter, have started the daunting task of airlifting some of the remains from the depths of the Mirador del Bosque gorge.
The investigation into the disappearance of seven individuals from a call center in Zapopan started after receiving reports on Tuesday, May 30. The gruesome find of body parts occurred during this search based on an anonymous tip. Preliminary details from the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office, which is directing the investigation, hint that the discovered remains share physical traits with some of the missing call center workers.
The initial find involved the uncovering of the first black bag containing remains. Limited natural light and difficult terrain conditions led to a pause in the search until the following day. It remains uncertain how many individuals the remains represent, but they were from both males and females.
The task of identifying the victims, counting the number of victims, and determining causes of death will fall to the Jalisco Forensic Medical Service.
Mexico’s homicide rate remains distressingly high according to government data. Over 110,000 persons are currently missing in Mexico, with Jalisco, notorious for drug cartel activity, leading in missing persons cases with 15,000 reported.
