An Alabama woman, Loretta Kay Carr, 45, has been arrested and charged with capital murder and kidnapping.
The arrest follows a nearly two-year investigation into the missing person case and subsequent death of Mary Elizabeth Isbell. Local news outlet, AL.com, reported that the arrest of Carr, from Fort Payne, AL, was made on June 25.
Court documents indicate that Carr is alleged to have abducted Isbell in October of 2021. Isbell, then 37, was last seen behind the wheel of a dark-colored Jeep. She was officially declared missing in January 2022, and the investigative efforts have led law enforcement to believe that Carr intentionally ended Isbell’s life by pushing her off a cliff.
Since her arrest, Carr has been detained at the DeKalb County Jail, without an option for bail. In response to her capital murder charges, Carr has called for a preliminary hearing, contending that the evidence against her is insufficient. Law enforcement has not released any details regarding the possible motivation behind Carr’s alleged crime, or any information about the relationship between Carr and Isbell.
The investigation is currently ongoing, with a primary focus on identifying a motive.
