Authorities in Michigan are investigating the mysterious death of a college student discovered lying at the roadside with head trauma on June 5.
23-year-old Mia Kanu was discovered in the early hours of June 3 after reportedly leaving a vehicle on her way home from a party. She was a student at Tennessee State University, where she pursued veterinary medicine.
Kanu was located in front of an apartment complex in Southfield, a Detroit suburb, and immediately taken to a nearby hospital. Tragically, she didn’t survive her injuries and was declared dead on June 5.
The Southfield Police Department is actively investigating the circumstances leading to Kanu’s exit from the vehicle and the subsequent cause of her death. “We’re currently unsure of the cause of death. All possibilities, including murder, are being investigated,” stated Sergeant Jared Womble. An autopsy is scheduled as part of the inquiry.
The sequence of events leading to the discovery of Kanu is a critical aspect that Deputy Chief Jeffrey Jagielski of the Southfield Police Department emphasizes. “Could it have been an accident? Was she forced out?” he pondered. The vehicle’s driver is fully cooperating with the investigation. Kanu had left a party where police say there had been an argument. She reportedly went into a car with a man and a woman who were said to be acquaintances of hers. What happened next is unknown.
In the midst of grief and funeral arrangements for her daughter, Bianca Vanmeter, Mia Kanu’s mother, expressed her desperation for answers. She questioned why her daughter’s friends didn’t call 911 immediately, assuming they were present.
Tennessee State University issued a statement grieving Kanu’s death, describing her as energetic, dedicated, and passionate about animals. She contributed significantly to the Food and Animal Science research at the university’s Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Emily Hayes, a colleague in her research, said, “It’s devastating to realize that someone with such vitality is no longer with us.”
