Tragedy struck a popular seaside resort when tourists watched in horror as a shark attacked and devoured a man just a few feet from the crowded beach.
The calamitous event took place at the Dream Beach Hotel and claimed the life of a Russian citizen, as reported by Russian media outlets. The victim, Vladimir Popov, was a 23-year-old who had been staying in Egypt for several months.
Viktor Voropayev, Russia’s consul-general in Hurghada, confirmed the deadly encounter. He said that Popov cried out to his father, who was on the beach, while courageously attempting to fend off the shark. Onlookers watched aghast as hotel personnel urgently instructed swimmers to get out of the water, the shark’s fin ominously approaching. Despite Popov’s brave resistance, it became evident his struggle was in vain when a bystander chillingly exclaimed, “It’s eating his remains now.” Moments later, the shark dragged Popov under, extinguishing any hopes of rescue.
Reports state that Popov’s girlfriend swam to safety but was visibly distraught as she sobbed on the beach, comforted by the surrounding crowd.
In light of the tragedy, authorities swiftly enacted a prohibition on swimming at the resort. The traumatizing incident left observers reeling, with some recounting the rapid response of rescue personnel and others detailing the unsettling spectacle of the shark devouring the victim. Following the attack, the shark responsible was located and killed.
