A father of six was fatally shot while attending his daughter’s high school graduation party in Texas.

The incident happened in the early hours of Friday, May 26 at a Houston residence. Destiny Tobias, the new graduate, held her father Adam Tobias in her arms after the deadly confrontation. Destiny’s stepmother, Neftaly Perez, who had been Tobias’s wife for 16 years, wasn’t present at the time of the shooting, nor were their five sons.

Philip Arning, the alleged shooter, is the estranged boyfriend of Destiny’s biological mother. Tensions flared at the mother’s house when Arning and Tobias argued over Tobias’s presence there. Destiny protested, arguing that Arning had no right to be in the house.

Perez has accused Arning of heartlessly and unexpectedly taking her husband’s life. Arning, who has been released on bail, is due in court on Tuesday.

A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to aid the family in managing funeral expenses and has already raised over $6,000.
