Two newborn babies were discovered unresponsive in a bathroom at a Chicago daycare center on Thursday, July 6, authorities said.
The infants were found concealed in a trash bag by a cleaning worker, leading to an immediate call to the police. Law enforcement was on the scene in the Streeterville neighborhood by approximately 7:00 p.m.
A 29-year-old woman, covered in blood, identified as an employee of the daycare center, had also been discovered at the scene at 6:00, an hour before, but no one was aware of the babies. She was quickly transferred to Northwestern Memorial Hospital to receive treatment for unidentified injuries. A statement by Bright Horizons, the operator of the daycare facility put out a statement saying that the incident took place at the center when a staff member “experienced a medical emergency that resulted in the unanticipated delivery of newborn twin babies.”
The dispatched police officers were briefed that the infants, found unresponsive in a black trash bag in a cabinet, were in dire need of medical aid. Despite every effort, the two babies were declared deceased after being rushed to Lurie Children’s Hospital.
Confirming the tragic event, Chicago police issued a statement on Thursday evening revealing an ongoing investigation into the deaths of the two infants at the daycare facility. The authorities have, so far, not released any information regarding potential suspects or details about the babies, including their age or ethnicity.
