In Wimbledon, southwest London, an SUV crashed into a private elementary school, resulting in the death of a young schoolgirl and leaving several others injured.
The incident occurred at The Study Prep, a girls’ school, shortly before 10 am on Thursday, July 6. The Land Rover involved veered across the school’s lawn before colliding with the main hall.
A woman in her 40s, the driver of the vehicle, has been taken into custody on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, according to a statement from London’s Metropolitan Police. Although the authorities have said that terrorism is not suspected, the full circumstances of the incident remain under investigation.
An eight-year-old girl lost her life at the scene. More than six others, including two adults, sustained injuries. The police expressed their condolences to the girl’s family and friends and emphasized their ongoing investigation into the incident. Images from the scene show the vehicle wedged against the school building, surrounded by police cordons and protective sheets.
Emergency services responded promptly, with approximately 20 ambulances and an air ambulance present at the school.
UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who is responsible for domestic security, expressed her sorrow and extended her condolences to the affected families and friends.
