Newly released body cam footage captured the moment when responding officers heard the final gunshot in a murder-suicide case involving the in-laws of Jimmie Johnson, a NASCAR star.

The victims, Terry and Jack Janway, Johnson’s mother-in-law and father-in-law, and their 11-year-old grandson, Dalton Janway, were found deceased at their Muskogee, Oklahoma home in late June. Lynn Hamlin, spokesperson for the Muskogee Police, reports that Terry Janway, 68, shot her husband, 69, and grandson before ending her own life.

The precipitating event for the police response was a 911 call, reporting a disturbance involving a firearm. The body cam footage from the responding officers revealed the discovery of Jack Janway’s body, hidden under a blanket in the living room. As they were making their entrance and announcing their identity, a single gunshot reverberated on the footage.

Following the tragic incident, Johnson pulled out of a race in Chicago. Details from the terminated 911 call indicate Terry Janway claimed to have an armed intruder in her home. The authorities have since affirmed the murder-suicide nature of the event, assuring residents that no further threat exists.

Muskogee Mayor Marlon Coleman, a former patient of Jack Janway’s chiropractic practice, voiced his shock and sorrow at the news. Reports of the Janway family’s recent bankruptcy filing show a debt of $475,000, indicating considerable financial hardship.

Friends suggest that Terry Janway’s quiet battle with depression, in the wake of her son’s death in a skydiving accident nine years ago, may have played a part in the sad series of events.
