The esteemed personal chef of Barack and Michelle Obama drowned while paddle-boarding off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard.
Local police confirmed the incident on Monday, July 24, disclosing that Tafari Campbell’s body was discovered approximately 100 feet from the shore shortly before 10 am. The 45-year-old culinary artist, a native of Dumfries, Virginia, had initially been a sous chef in the Obama White House and maintained his service to the family post Barack Obama’s administration.
Campbell’s tragic demise occurred in Edgartown Great Pond, in proximity to the Obamas’ seasonal residence on Martha’s Vineyard. While the former First Family was not present during the incident, they often reside on the island during the summer months.
Authorities received an emergency distress call at 7:46 pm on Sunday, July 23, indicating that a man, later identified as Campbell, had not re-emerged after experiencing difficulties during paddle-boarding. Despite immediate search operations, he was not located until the following morning when divers, aided by sonar equipment, discovered his body.
In response to the news, the Obamas released a heartfelt statement, expressing their sorrow and paying tribute to Campbell. They reminisced about their first encounter with him at the White House, recalling his belief in food’s potential to bring people together. Over time, they recognized his warm-hearted, jovial nature and his extraordinary kindness which positively influenced everyone he met.
The investigation surrounding the circumstances of Campbell’s tragic passing is being carried out jointly by the Massachusetts State Police and the Edgartown police.
