8-Year-Old Girl Dead: Hit By School Bus

An eight-year-old student met with a fatal accident at approximately 7:18 am on August 16, near 47th Street South and Kansas Highway 15 in Wichita, Kansas.

Harmoney Harper, on her way to Derby Elementary School, was waiting at her usual bus stop in front of her house accompanied by her brother.

While they were waiting, the girl moved between two stationary cars onto the street, where she was struck by a passing Derby school bus. This bus was different from the one she had been waiting to board. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the accident site but were unable to revive the young girl, and she was pronounced dead on-site.

Harmoney’s father, Jasper, recalled that his wife heard his son screaming outside, and woke him up. By the time he had gotten to the front door he heard “Call 911, my daughter’s dead”.

In light of the event, Heather Bohaty, the Superintendent of Derby Public Schools, released a statement: “The loss of our student is deeply felt. To help our school community cope, we have mobilized extra social workers from our district.”
