Authorities in Fayetteville, North Carolina are investigating an event in which an 11-year-old boy allegedly shot an eight-year-old girl.

The girl, named Jenesis Dockery, was at the boy’s mother’s house with her younger sibling as part of a babysitting arrangement on July 25. The gunshot resulted in severe head injuries, and Jenesis succumbed to them two days later.

The babysitter, the boy’s mother, was said to be a friend of the family and she had cared for Jenesis and her sister many times in the past without a problem.

Though the boy hasn’t been formally charged, discussions about charging him with manslaughter and larceny of a firearm are ongoing. The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office has taken him into custody, and he currently resides at the Department of Juvenile Detention.

The involved firearm was sourced from an unlocked safe in the house. Notably, the boy had previously posted pictures on social platforms featuring firearms. The lawyer representing the Dockery family verified the firearm’s location prior to the incident. He even mentioned that the boy knew the safe’s combination.

As the situation unfolds, there are questions regarding potential legal actions related to child supervision.
