A community outreach event in Seattle devolved into chaos as a shooting left five injured, two critically.
On the evening of Friday, July 28, an episode of violence erupted at the King Donuts parking lot. Local authorities have stated that dozens of rounds were discharged during the incident, which happened at around 9 pm.
The event was taking place in the Rainier Valley parking lot when the gunfire started. “We know that there were dozens and dozens of rounds that were fired,” said Adrian Diaz, the Chief of Seattle Police, while responding to the incident.
Following the gunfire, four victims were urgently transported to a nearby hospital. Two individuals in their 20s, a man and a woman, were critically injured. Two other men, also in their 20s, were declared stable after receiving medical care. Another man, in his 30s, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
All victims were part of the community outreach event which was violently interrupted by the shooting. The motive behind the incident remains unknown, and there have been no arrests made or suspects identified so far.
Reacting to the shooting, Mayor Bruce Harrell of Seattle described the incident as a “tragedy.” He pledged to offer explanations to the concerned community, lauding their resilience. Addressing the larger problem, he stated, “That’s the tragedy of today – of too many guns in the wrong places, in the wrong hands.”
