A fast-moving house fire in New Jersey claimed the lives of four victims, including a baby and a teenage girl.
The fire broke out on Tuesday afternoon, August 1, in Lacey Township, leaving the neighborhood in shock and authorities scrambling to find answers.
Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer confirmed the loss of two women, an infant, and a teenage girl in the fire that engulfed a two-story home.
The blaze was first reported at around 12:30 pm, and by the time firefighters arrived on the scene, the house was already fully in flames, with black smoke filling the air. Despite the firefighters’ valiant efforts, they could not save the four victims.
One woman escaped the inferno before the roof collapsed, forcing the firefighters to evacuate.
The survivor, identified as Brenda Wright, 67, suffered injuries in the incident and was rushed to the hospital where she continues to receive medical care.
Amidst the tragedy, stories of heroism emerged. Neighbor Robert Juska recounted how he and others rescued Brenda Wright, who attempted to re-enter the house to save her family despite her injuries. Smoke made it difficult for anyone to access the property.
Investigators examined the scene and have now determined that the fire originated on the west side porch of the home. Although they have not conclusively pinpointed the exact cause, Billhimer said, “Improperly discarded smoking material cannot be eliminated” as a potential factor contributing to the devastating blaze.
The victims have been identified as Alaina Wright, 34, her four-month-old baby, River, Jennifer Wright, 39, and Angel Allan, 14.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge residents to exercise utmost caution and ensure the proper handling and disposal of smoking materials.
