An IRS special agent was killed on Thursday, August 17, while participating in a training exercise at the Federal Correctional Institution’s firing range in Phoenix.
During the incident, various federal agencies were utilizing the range for training purposes, according to Aimee Arthur-Wastell, the Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesperson.
The agent, identified as Patrick Bauer, 47, was involved in a regular training session when the event unfolded, according to the FBI.
Details surrounding the circumstances or subsequent arrests remain undisclosed.
The Phoenix police found Bauer shot and had him transferred to a local hospital with serious injuries. No staff from the FBOP or firing range reported injuries.
The FBI leads the investigation, assisted by Phoenix police, emphasizing confidentiality during this phase. Their findings will be forwarded to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona.
Bauer was a retired master sergeant in the Arizona Air National Guard. He is survived by his wife and four children.
