One person died, and over 50 others sustained injuries when a tour bus rolled over near the Grand Canyon West Skywalk.
The accident occurred on the Hualapai Indian Reservation on Tuesday, August 1, according to authorities in northern Arizona.
Tribal representatives confirmed the incident occurred in proximity to the Grand Canyon West parking area. The accident involved a collision between a visitor’s vehicle and a bus operated by a tour company. The emergency services of the Hualapai tribe were alerted about the situation at approximately 9:50 am.
Multiple emergency response teams, along with medical flight units, were dispatched to the accident site.
Of the 57 individuals involved in the accident, eight required airlifts to medical facilities, while the remainder were transported by ground. The identity of the deceased and specifics regarding the injured individuals remain undisclosed at this time.
The Hualapai Emergency Operations department verified the single fatality. The investigation into the death is being jointly managed by the Hualapai Nation Police Department and the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS).
The Grand Canyon West is overseen by the Hualapai tribe and functions separately from the Grand Canyon National Park, which is under the National Park Service’s purview.
Inquiries into the cause and circumstances of the accident are ongoing. Following a brief halt due to the accident, helicopter tours and the Skywalk attraction at Grand Canyon West resumed operations on Wednesday.
