In the midst of the disastrous wildfires that have affected Maui and resulted in the loss of at least 96 lives, celebrities are uniting with locals to support the impacted communities.
Oprah Winfrey, a part-time Maui resident for over 15 years, was seen offering help at the War Memorial Stadium in Wailuku, which now serves as an evacuation center.
Winfrey commented, “It’s a bit overwhelming, but I’m pleased to see such strong support coming in.” The star assessed the evacuees’ needs and personally shopped for essential supplies, including pillows, shampoo, and diapers. Social media images showed Winfrey handing out items and interacting with displaced residents.
The situation has also garnered attention from other notable figures. Honolulu-born Aquaman star Jason Momoa shared his thoughts on Instagram, emphasizing the importance of community support. He also spotlighted the nonprofit ‘Āina Momona, which is raising funds to help affected residents.
Several relief groups and initiatives are addressing the situation on the island. The Kakoo-Haleakala group recognized Winfrey’s contributions. Additionally, the Hawaii Community Fund and the Maui Mutual Aid Fund are gathering support, targeting aid to the most vulnerable populations, including families, the elderly, and those with disabilities.
Local outlets are urging survivors to use the Red Cross emergency app to mark themselves as “safe,” especially since large sections of Maui, like the historic Lahaina area, are experiencing communication challenges.
The sense of community is palpable, with organizations, celebrities, and other people coming together in what marks the island’s largest collective response since the 1960 tsunami, which claimed 61 lives.
