Passengers on an American Airlines flight experienced an unexpected descent when their plane dropped over 18,000 feet just 43 minutes after takeoff.
FlightAware data revealed that the Embraer ERJ-145 descended 18,600 feet in only six minutes. During this period, travelers reported a “loud bang” followed by a distinct burning odor.
Harrison Hove, a passenger and professor at the University of Florida, described the event as frightening. He noted the ear-popping sensation and the strong burning smell. Photos shared by Hove on social media show oxygen masks being deployed, with passengers, including Hove, using them.
American Airlines confirmed that the rapid descent was due to a pressurization issue. In a statement, the airline said, “While in flight, the crew received an indication of a possible pressurization issue and safely descended to a lower altitude.” The airline also extended an apology to its customers.
Despite the alarming situation, Hove praised the flight’s crew and pilots for their professionalism. His social media comments about the crew’s efforts have since garnered attention.
The affected flight, American Eagle flight 5916 operated by Piedmont Airlines, traveled from Charlotte, North Carolina to Gainesville, Florida and landed without any reported injuries. There were 50 passengers and three crew members on board.
