A severe accident on Interstate 390, located near Wayland, New York, resulted in the death of two individuals, including a pregnant woman.
The accident occurred on Saturday, August 19, at around 9:15 am, involving a passenger van that was transporting 13 people from Pennsylvania to Niagara Falls. The occupants ranged in age from 1-43.
A malfunction with the van’s rear wheel is believed to be the catalyst, causing the vehicle to strike the median and roll over several times.
The 2005 Ford van was filled with members from three different Pennsylvania families. According to the New York State Police, of the 13 occupants, a young boy, Alex Andrade, 12, was pronounced dead at the crash site. The other passengers were transferred to various medical facilities, with the pregnant woman, Margarita Ramirez-Luna, 40, succumbing to her injuries later on. Two severely injured individuals were airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for immediate care.
Video footage of the scene showcased the van’s heavily damaged state, with multiple dents, compromised rear doors, and a broken windshield.
Despite the grim circumstances, the baby of the deceased pregnant woman was successfully delivered and is under observation at Strong Memorial Hospital, according to Trooper Commander Brian J. Ratajczak.
The identities of the other individuals involved are yet to be publicized, and the investigation is active.
