A multi-vehicle accident claimed the lives of three young women in the Westmont neighborhood of Los Angeles, California early Sunday morning, Aug. 27.
The victims were passengers in an Uber, struck by a speeding Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The collision occurred near the intersection of Vermont Avenue and Century Boulevard just before 5:30 am.
Preliminary investigations by the California Highway Patrol indicate the Mercedes was traveling northbound on Vermont Avenue at a high rate of speed, possibly attempting to beat a red light. Witnesses estimated its speed at around 80-85 mph. The vehicle collided with an Uber – a black Honda sedan – waiting to make a left turn, sending it hurling across the road.
The victims, Juvelyn Arroyo, 23, Veronica Amezola, 23, and Kimberly Izquierdo, 27, were in the back seat of the Uber Honda. One was ejected upon impact. Victor Gonzalez, an on-scene witness, described an attempt to assist the women: “I tried helping the girls, but they weren’t responding or breathing,” he said.
The Uber driver is in critical condition, while another male passenger in the front seat sustained serious injuries but is in stable condition. Both were transported to a local hospital.
The Mercedes driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was also hospitalized. The reason for his driving behavior is under investigation. While drugs and alcohol are not currently considered factors, the idea he may have been fleeing another incident is being explored.
The investigation continues, with police seeking further witness accounts and additional video footage.
