Two Dead in Wrong-Way Collision

A wrong-way crash claimed the lives of a Long Island husband and wife early Saturday morning, August 13.

Authorities allege that the crash was caused by a drunk driver, identified as Sotirios Spanos, 32, of Syosset, N.Y.

According to the Nassau County Police Department, Spanos was allegedly driving under the influence when his Acura MDX veered across the yellow divider on Northern Boulevard in Laurel Hollow and collided head-on with a Ferrari Convertible. The convertible was carrying the couple, Odalis and Ismenia Urena, both 37, and the crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Ismenia, an author and life coach, who was a passenger in the convertible, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her husband, Odalis, a construction company owner, was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward. The couple is survived by their two young daughters, ages 8 and twelve.

The criminal complaint, obtained by local news outlets, states that Spanos remained at the scene and agreed to a preliminary breath test. The results reportedly showed that his blood alcohol concentration was over three times the legal limit.

Spanos faces multiple charges, including aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree manslaughter, second-degree assault, driving while intoxicated, and reckless driving, according to the police statement.

Spanos is being held without bail and has entered a not-guilty plea in the case.
