On Monday, August 7, in Salem, Indiana, a woman defended her husband by shooting an intruder who had entered their front yard.
The event occurred around 6:30 pm, when Michael Chastain, 45, reportedly drove his vehicle onto the couple’s property and approached the male homeowner.
Chastain then forced the man to the ground and held him at gunpoint. The homeowner’s wife observed the situation from inside their house, retrieved a handgun, and confronted Chastain.
Indiana State Police Sergeant John Davis said, “[Chastain] put a firearm to the homeowner’s head. Observing the altercation, the wife walked outside with a firearm and shot Chastain.” The assailant was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
State police noted that Chastain previously had romantic ties with the couple’s daughter. However, she had since moved out and wasn’t present during the incident.
The motive behind Chastain’s actions remains unclear.
Chastain had a known criminal history and had previously come to the attention of law enforcement.
The homeowner has not been charged in connection with the shooting, as reported by WLKY.
