The Notting Hill Carnival in London, an event celebrated for its vibrant display of Caribbean culture, experienced a surge in violence during its final day, August 28. A total of eight individuals were stabbed, with one 29-year-old man remaining in critical condition. The event, held over the Bank Holiday weekend and drawing more than 2 million attendees, is one of the largest of its kind, often compared to Brazil’s Rio Carnival.
Videos captured during the carnival depict individuals armed with machetes, further intensifying the atmosphere of chaos. A separate incident reported a 19-year-old hospitalized following a stabbing, while six others sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Furthermore, the Metropolitan Police Federation highlighted that 75 officers faced attacks during the festivities.
Over the course of the two-day event, a staggering 275 individuals were arrested on a range of charges. These included weapon possession, assaults on police officers, drug offenses, and sexual offenses. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan, overseeing policing during the carnival, acknowledged the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the significance of the event to the Caribbean community in London while condemning the violence.
